Teams that are highly productive are “addictive.” When we encounter them at work, we want to belong or enlist their members to boost our own teams. Once we’ve been part of such a team, we strive to recreate its special energy in every work group to which we belong. Because highly productive teams work in a “zone” where the work product is greater than the sum of the capabilities of the members, I call them “super teams.”

Would you ever enter a business meeting with your fly unzipped or toilet paper stuck to your heel? Of course not. Yet business men and women expose themselves to the same types of gaffe when writing with haste. “John sent copies to Beth and I,” is the equivalent of spinach wedged in your front teeth.

Perhaps email was the beginning of “social media.” It brought an immediacy to written communication, as well as more frequent opportunities to embarrass oneself in public. Blogs, while less immediate, introduced individuality and personality to corporate or business publications. Blog replies or comments, however, are more like very public emails. While IM (Instant Messaging) and texting appear to remain in the “personal” realm, Twitter puts it all together: immediacy, individuality, personality, and (uh-oh) business publication.

Whenever processes are complex many of us wish that we had an expert looking over our shoulder guiding and helping us – but in a these times of financial turbulence few organizations can afford that luxury and many are looking to reduce costs in every way possible.

For many organizations reducing costs means less people and very often training is an early casualty; the people who are left are expected to do more with fewer resources – and with less or even in some extreme cases no training.

I am a member of several free-to-join professional websites that allow me to network with other similar credentialed professionals, and that provide me both a chance to build my Whuffie* and gain access to others more experienced in areas I may need to tap into from time to time.  Some sites work hard to make sure they’re not overwhelmed with ‘service providers’ trying to gain access to a customer or client base, yet most remain unregulated in terms of validated “advice” from their constituents.  There have been many times when I have been appalled at the confident, yet completely invalid response to a question in one of these online communities. For these sites to be successful, they need to encourage their member professionals to more actively self-monitor to ensure incorrect / invalid advice is kept in check.

One of the perennial problems of business cases is that is they seem to offer so much certainty in theory, but are stubbornly unpredictable in practice.

The problem is that the solutions that we develop in workshops and in on paper are unencumbered by the messiness of the real world. They rarely take into account the compromises and complexities necessary to make a change work let alone the reaction of the organisation to the change itself.

For thousands of years nearly all commerce was conducted locally with the buying experience highly personal. The competition was very well known, the cost of supplies and labor quite similar and the opportunities for innovation and product differentiation limited. In today’s global marketplace, in which your largest competitor is just as likely to be on the other side of the globe as across town, how do you establish and maintain your edge?

Most would agree that our economy is still not in the greatest shape.  The healthcare market is still going through some major changes.  Many hospitals are cutting back on services, reducing the number of vendors and slashing costs.  I think you might agree that there is certainly less low hanging fruit right now in many instances and you may have to work on your vertical leap to land a new customer.   It always helps if you can leap tall buildings at a single bound.

I’m a big football fan.  It’s the second greatest team sport next to Rugby in my opinion.   Before I get too far into this blog entry, it is not my intent to alienate the fairer sex or those folks that might not have as great a fervor for sports or its imagery in analogies.

Regardless of anyone’s favorite players, teams, or sports,  whether you are a die-hard fan or merely ‘jump on the band wagon’ as the respective playoffs wind down at the end of each season, there is an atmosphere of hope, anticipation, a little fear or dread for a letdown, & passion for your team of choice to win!  The same applies for your company when competing for a new major client or project.  There are so many directions to go with this, but Winning is what it is all about!
